Traditional Christmas market in the historic old town
The traditional Christmas market in the historic old town is Hanover’s most well-known Advent market. Surrounding the Marktkirche are around 130 beautifully decorated stands where you can buy special Christmas items and presents. From Christmas tree ornaments and wooden toys to ceramics and household goods – there’s something here for everyone. The view of the four surrounding church spires and the sea of lights on the square makes every visit a perfect Christmas experience.
Finnish Christmas Village
Who doesn’t love the Scandinavian lifestyle? Experience northern Christmas traditions in the Finnish Christmas Village and take a look around in a real Lapp tent. In the Christmas Village, visitors can choose from numerous Finnish products such as handicrafts, reindeer hide, lambskins and beauty products. Sample the many northern delicacies the market has to offer, including salmon-on-a-stick and a wide selection of sweet treats, and wash it all down with a mug of Glöggli – Finnish mulled wine.
Historic Village on the River Leine
For all medieval fans, Hanover has the perfect market set up around the Museum of History. The Historic Village, on the banks of the Leine river, portrays daily working life during the Middle Ages. Craftspeople demonstrate how they make their various wares, jugglers and magicians show off their skills, and you can even have a go on the blacksmith’s anvil. Be swept away to a bygone age and immerse yourself in medieval city life!
A forest in the middle of town? That’s what you get during Advent in Hanover, when fifty fir trees are set up on Holzmarkt turning the square into an enchanted forest. The Wunschbrunnenwald covers 400 m2 and there are lots of little Christmas stalls hidden amongst the trees that you can discover as you walk through the forest. The highlight is the Holzmarkt fountain; according to tradition, it can make your wishes come true if you turn the ring!
Even the Lister Meile, Hanover’s famous shopping boulevard, is a favourite destination during the Advent period. Here, you’ll find over 70 stands and stalls where you can admire handicrafts and many other unique Christmas gifts. The Lister Meile Christmas market is particularly suitable for families. Keep the little ones entertained with the puppet show and the carousel and surprise them with a visit to Father Christmas!
Kröpcke – Experience the world’s largest Christmas pyramid
The highlight of the festive season is the world’s largest Christmas pyramid. Bedecked with around 300,000 lights, it attracts both locals and tourists in droves. The 18 metre-high pyramid is located on Kröpcke, a central square in the city centre. On the first floor, you can order warm food, mulled wine and other hot drinks and look out over the beautiful sea of Christmas lights.
