"City of 1000 flames" in the heart of the Ruhr

The former coal mining city in the heart of the Ruhr District underwent radical change in the course of the 20th century with the decline of heavy industry. The economy and former industrial landscape were completely restructured in the "city of 1000 flames" - so called due to the torches of the coking plants.

The number of overnight stays continues to rise, with record-breaking rates of 7% and above, not least thanks to the proximity to the trade fair cities of Düsseldorf and Dortmund.

Football and industry: tradition and culture

The Schalke city on the Rhine-Herne Canal has more to offer than just top-flight football. One of the main attractions has to be the ZOOM theme park, the former Ruhr Zoo, with its four themed areas. A host of musical and

sporting events, such as the Gelsenkirchen Jazz Days or the Ruhr Olympic Game, take up a lot of space on the city's calendar of events. There is much of the industrial culture, which once defined the area so strongly, to experience along the route.
