Chemnitz has been named European Capital of Culture 2025 and intends to present its offerings in a creative manner. The city wants to highlight both its historical significance and its modern innovative strength. Under the motto “C the Unseen”, Chemnitz wants to display the undiscovered sides of the region.
The residents of the city play a central role in the cultural projects. In particular, Chemnitz wants to showcase the charm and cultural diversity of the surrounding region, the so-called “Saxon Manchester”. The artistic initiatives and creative concepts aim to connect the region's industrial culture with the modern times.
The city is investing in new cultural infrastructure, including museums, theaters and public spaces, in order to create a sustainable cultural heritage. Chemnitz is known for its vibrant street art scene, and this will also play an important role in the Capital of Culture. International artists and local talents will be invited to present their works for an enthusiastic audience in public spaces.
Art and cultural festivals are an important part of the planned program and are expected to attract visitors from all over Europe. Additionally, Chemnitz wants to use the Capital of Culture year to reflect on its diverse past, including the upheavals of the reunification period.
