Kassel's top attractions
Kassel is a major city in the federal state of Hesse and has a lot to offer, especially for historically and culturally interested visitors. Although the bombings in WWII destroyed most of the buildings in the city centre, Kassel's tourism is booming thanks to the variety of attractions: architectural monuments, churches and museums, but also many theatres and a multifaceted cultural programme await you in Kassel. There is just so much to explore!
documenta city Kassel
The documenta is one of the world's leading art exhibitions and a source of inspiration for artists. Every 5 years, it attracts thousands of art lovers. Find out more >> here.
Wilhelmshöhe Palace and hillside park
Wilhelmshöhe Palace is located in a landscape park of the same name, Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe. The park is known as the largest hillside park and thus rightfully belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage. In summer, a unique spectacle takes place in the park: On Wednesdays, Sundays and public holidays, the water games impress with laser projections, light art and an atmospheric framework programme. In addition to the imposing architecture, the Gallery of the Old Masters in the Palace is an absolute must-see.
The documenta 16 in Kassel 2027
Documenta 16 will take place in Kassel from June 12 to September 19, 2027. Naomi Beckwith has been appointed as the artistic director of the upcoming exhibition. The event is considered one of the most important showcases of contemporary art worldwide and attracts visitors from all over the globe every five years. Since its founding in 1955 by Arnold Bode, its goal has been to reconnect postwar Germany culturally with the international art world. The documenta sees itself not only as an exhibition but also as a space for social and political dialogue. With Beckwith’s appointment, a clear shift in direction is emerging, particularly after the controversies surrounding documenta 15. Beckwith emphasized that she “will not tolerate any physical or symbolic violence” and that human dignity and mutual respect will be guiding principles of her work. In parallel with the preparations for documenta 16, an organizational development process is underway to learn from the mistakes of the past. Kassel itself benefits greatly from the documenta: public artworks and numerous accompanying events leave a lasting mark on the city’s landscape. For the 70th anniversary of the documenta in 2025, projects such as “7000 Palmen” by Cosima von Bonin, concerts, performances, and book presentations took place, actively involving the local community. The planning of documenta 16 is being carried out by an international selection committee that evaluated suitable concepts for the artistic direction. One of the key goals of documenta 16 is to create a balance between artistic freedom and values such as human dignity and anti-discrimination. The city itself will once again serve as an exhibition space, featuring outdoor artworks and public-space interventions. The Fridericianum remains one of the central venues of the exhibition. For many, documenta 2027 represents an opportunity to rebuild trust and mark a new beginning for the international art scene. Overall, documenta 16 is seen as a chance to rethink contemporary art, open it up globally, and place greater emphasis on social responsibility.
